Unveiling the Secrets to Luscious Locks: 10 Essential Tips for Healthy Hair
Unveiling the Secrets to Luscious Locks: 10 Essential Tips for Healthy Hair
Healthy, vibrant hair is often regarded as a symbol of beauty and vitality. However, achieving and maintaining optimal hair health requires more than just good genetics; it demands proper care and attention. In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore ten essential tips for nurturing your locks from root to tip, ensuring they remain strong, shiny, and resilient. From nourishing your scalp to choosing the right products and lifestyle practices, these expert-approved strategies will help you unlock the secrets to luscious, healthy hair. Embrace a Nutrient-Rich Diet Nutrient-rich diet is fundamental for nurturing healthy hair from the inside out. Incorporating foods rich in essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients is key to promoting hair growth, strength, and vitality. Opt for foods high in biotin, such as eggs, nuts, and whole grains, to support keratin production and prevent hair breakage. Include vitamin-rich fruits and vegetables like spinach, carrots, and berries, which are packed with antioxidants to protect hair follicles from damage and promote scalp health. Additionally, ensure you're consuming an adequate amount of protein from sources like lean meats, fish, beans, and legumes to support hair growth and repair. By nourishing your body with a diverse array of nutrient-dense foods, you can lay the foundation for healthy, luscious locks that shine with vitality. Gentle Hair Care Practices Gentle hair care practices are essential for maintaining the health and integrity of your locks. Start by choosing the right shampoo and conditioner suited to your hair type and concerns, opting for sulfate-free formulas to prevent stripping natural oils and causing dryness. When washing, use lukewarm water instead of hot water to avoid scalp irritation and moisture loss. After washing, gently pat your hair with a soft towel to remove excess water instead of vigorously rubbing, which can lead to breakage and frizz. When detangling, use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to gently work through knots, starting from the ends and working your way up to the roots. Limit the use of heat styling tools, and always apply a heat protectant spray before styling to minimize damage. By adopting these gentle hair care practices, you can keep your strands strong, smooth, and healthy. Scalp Care Essentials Scalp care is the cornerstone of healthy hair, as a well-nourished scalp provides the optimal environment for hair growth and vitality. Start by keeping your scalp clean and free from buildup by washing regularly with a gentle shampoo. Avoid overwashing, as this can strip the scalp of its natural oils and lead to dryness and irritation. Incorporating a scalp scrub or exfoliating treatment into your routine can help remove dead skin cells and unclog hair follicles, promoting healthy hair growth. Additionally, consider using a scalp oil or serum enriched with nourishing ingredients like tea tree oil, peppermint, or jojoba oil to soothe inflammation, balance oil production, and stimulate circulation. By prioritizing scalp health, you can lay the foundation for strong, resilient hair that shines with vitality. Choosing the Right Hair Products Choosing the right hair products is crucial for maintaining healthy locks and achieving your desired hairstyle. Begin by understanding your hair type, whether it's dry, oily, curly, or color-treated, to select products that address your specific needs. Look for gentle, sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners that nourish and hydrate your hair without stripping away natural oils. When it comes to styling products, opt for those formulated with natural, nourishing ingredients and free from harsh chemicals like sulfates, parabens, and silicones. Consider experimenting with different products to find what works best for your hair, and don't be afraid to seek recommendations from hairstylists or trusted sources. By choosing hair products tailored to your individual needs, you can enhance the health and appearance of your locks while achieving your desired look with confidence. Lifestyle Practices for Healthy Hair Lifestyle practices play a significant role in maintaining healthy, vibrant hair. Managing stress levels is essential, as high stress can lead to hair loss and damage. Incorporating stress-reducing activities such as meditation, yoga, or spending time outdoors can help promote overall well-being and support healthy hair growth. Prioritizing sleep is equally important, as lack of quality sleep can disrupt the body's natural hair growth cycle. Aim for seven to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep each night and create a relaxing bedtime routine to ensure restful sleep. Additionally, maintaining a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and exercising regularly contribute to overall hair health by providing essential nutrients, promoting circulation, and reducing inflammation. By incorporating these lifestyle practices into your daily routine, you can nurture your hair from the inside out and achieve luscious locks that radiate vitality and strength. Regular Maintenance and Trims Regular maintenance and trims are essential components of a healthy hair care routine, promoting overall hair health and vitality. While it may seem counterintuitive, scheduling regular trims every 6 to 8 weeks can actually help prevent split ends and breakage, allowing your hair to grow longer and stronger. Trimming removes damaged or split ends, preventing them from traveling up the hair shaft and causing further damage. Additionally, regular trims help maintain the shape and style of your haircut, ensuring your locks always look fresh and vibrant. In between trims, incorporate maintenance practices such as deep conditioning treatments, protective hairstyles, and minimizing heat styling to further support hair health and prevent damage. By prioritizing regular maintenance and trims, you can keep your hair looking its best while promoting long-term strength and resilience. Conclusion With these ten essential tips for healthy hair, you can embark on a journey to transform your locks from dull and damaged to luscious and vibrant. By nourishing your body from within, adopting gentle hair care practices, prioritizing scalp health, choosing the right products, embracing a healthy lifestyle, and staying consistent with maintenance, you can achieve the hair of your dreams and exude confidence and radiance every day. The Nutrient Powerhouse: Exploring 10 Health Benefits of Avocado in Your Diet
The Nutrient Powerhouse: Exploring 10 Health Benefits of Avocado in Your Diet
Avocado, Often referred to as "nature's butter," avocado is more than just a delicious fruit. It's a powerhouse of nutrients that offer a multitude of health benefits.  Adding avocado to your diet can significantly enhance your overall well-being. Let's explore the top 10 reasons to incorporate avocado into your meals, based on insights from Continental Hospital Hyderabad. Rich in Nutrients: Avocados are a one-stop shop for essential vitamins and minerals. They boast a treasure trove of vitamins C, E, K, and the entire B-complex family. Minerals like potassium, magnesium, and folate are also abundant, all playing crucial roles in keeping your body functioning optimally and promoting overall health. Heart Health Hero: Avocados are champions for your heart. They're rich in healthy fats, particularly monounsaturated fats. These "good fats" help lower your LDL (bad) cholesterol levels, reducing the risk of heart disease, a leading cause of mortality worldwide. Studies have shown that regularly including avocados in your diet can significantly improve your heart health profile. Weight Management Aid: Don't be fooled by their calorie content! Avocados can actually be a valuable ally in weight management. The secret lies in their fiber, healthy fats, and low sugar content. This winning combination promotes satiety, the feeling of fullness, which keeps you feeling satisfied for longer and can help you curb cravings, ultimately leading to reduced overall calorie intake. Digestive Health Defender: Packed with fiber, avocados act as a broom for your digestive system. Fiber promotes regular bowel movements, preventing constipation and ensuring smooth sailing in your digestive tract. Additionally, the fiber in avocados helps maintain a healthy gut microbiome, a community of good bacteria essential for proper digestion and overall well-being. Eye Health Protector: Avocados are nature's sunglasses! They are rich in antioxidants like lutein and zeaxanthin, which act as shields for your eyes. These antioxidants help protect against age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a leading cause of vision loss, and may also offer protection against cataracts. Skin and Hair Soother: Forget expensive creams; avocados can be your secret weapon for radiant skin and healthy hair. The vitamins and antioxidants in avocados work wonders for your skin by hydrating and nourishing skin cells. They also promote collagen production, the protein that gives your skin its elasticity, keeping it youthful and reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Avocado oil, with its moisturizing properties, can also be a boon for dry, brittle hair, restoring its shine and softness. Blood Sugar Control Buddy: Avocados can be a diabetic's delight! Their low sugar content and high fiber content work together like magic to regulate blood sugar levels. Fiber helps slow down the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream, preventing spikes and crashes in blood sugar levels. This makes avocados a suitable addition to a diabetic-friendly diet, helping individuals manage their blood sugar more effectively. Bone Health Booster: Strong bones are essential for a healthy life, and avocados can be your secret weapon for building a rock-solid foundation. They contain vitamins K and D, both crucial players in bone health. Vitamin K aids in calcium absorption, the building block of strong bones, while vitamin D helps regulate calcium levels in the body. By ensuring proper calcium absorption and utilization, avocados contribute to maintaining strong bones and teeth. Anti-Inflammatory Champion: Chronic inflammation is linked to various health problems. Avocados come to the rescue with their potent anti-inflammatory properties. The phytonutrients and antioxidants they contain help reduce inflammation in the body, potentially lowering the risk of chronic diseases associated with inflammation, such as arthritis, heart disease, and even some cancers. Mood and Brain Function Enhancer: Feeling sluggish or foggy-brained? Avocados might be the answer! Their nutrient profile, particularly the healthy fats and antioxidants, can significantly support brain health and improve your mood. The omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E in avocados are especially beneficial for cognitive function. Studies suggest that including avocados in your diet can enhance memory, focus, and overall brain function. So, the next time you're at the grocery store, don't hesitate to grab an avocado. This versatile fruit can be enjoyed in countless ways, adding a delicious and nutritious boost to your diet. Remember, a healthy you starts with what you put on your plate, and avocados are a fantastic addition to a well-balanced and health-promoting diet! Adding Avocados to Your Diet Avocados are a nutritional powerhouse, but knowing their benefits is only half the battle.  The good news is incorporating them into your diet is both simple and versatile! Here are some creative ways to get your daily dose of delicious avocado: Salads: Avocado adds a creamy texture and rich flavor to any salad.  Dice or slice it to complement a bed of mixed greens, spinach, or kale.  For a protein boost, throw in grilled chicken, shrimp, or tofu.  Don't forget a light vinaigrette dressing to tie it all together. Sandwiches: Level up your lunchtime routine by swapping out mayo or butter for mashed avocado on your favorite sandwich.  Avocado pairs beautifully with lean meats like turkey or chicken breast, as well as with veggie burgers or falafel.  Add sliced tomatoes, cucumbers, and sprouts for extra flavor and crunch. Smoothies: Avocados lend a silky texture and healthy fats to smoothies, making them extra filling and satisfying.  Combine avocado with fruits like banana, mango, or berries for a delightful flavor combination.  Spinach or kale can be snuck in for a hidden veggie boost, while yogurt or milk provide protein and creaminess. Toast Topping: Mashed avocado is a delightful alternative to butter or cream cheese on toast.  Top it with a sprinkle of everything bagel seasoning, chili flakes, or a squeeze of lemon juice for added pizazz.  For a protein-packed breakfast, add a poached egg on top. Beyond the Basics: Think outside the box! Explore using avocado in dips like guacamole, dollops in soups, or even mashed and used as a base for healthy, homemade pasta sauce. Remember, moderation is key. While avocados are incredibly nutritious, they are also calorie-dense. Consulting with a healthcare professional or nutritionist can help you determine the right portion size for your individual needs and create a balanced diet that incorporates avocados to support your specific health goals. Continental Hospital: Hyderabad encourages the inclusion of nutrient-rich foods like avocados in daily meals to promote optimal health and well-being. By understanding the diverse benefits of avocados and making informed dietary choices, you can take proactive steps towards a healthier lifestyle. Mumps Prevention: Simple Steps to Stay Healthy
Mumps Prevention: Simple Steps to Stay Healthy
Mumps is a contagious viral infection caused by the mumps virus, primarily known for causing swelling of the salivary glands. While mumps can affect people of all ages, it is most common in children. While it's generally not life-threatening, mumps can cause discomfort, fever, headache, fatigue, and loss of appetite. In some cases, especially among adults, complications such as inflammation of the testicles (orchitis), ovaries (oophoritis), or brain (encephalitis) can occur, highlighting the importance of prevention. Vaccination remains the cornerstone of mumps prevention. The measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is highly effective in providing immunity against mumps. In addition to vaccination, practicing good hygiene habits can further reduce the risk of mumps transmission. Frequent handwashing with soap and water, especially after coughing, sneezing, or touching potentially contaminated surfaces, can help prevent the spread of the virus. Avoiding close contact with individuals who are infected with mumps, such as sharing living spaces or personal items, is also crucial. During mumps outbreaks or in areas where mumps cases are reported, wearing face masks or coverings in crowded or enclosed spaces can provide an extra layer of protection. Proper respiratory etiquette, such as covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, can prevent respiratory droplets from spreading the virus. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle contributes to overall immunity and can support resistance against mumps and other infectious diseases. A balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, along with regular physical activity, helps keep the immune system strong. Adequate sleep, stress management, and staying hydrated are also essential for optimal immune function. The Power of Vaccination: The single most effective way to prevent mumps is through vaccination.  The MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine is a safe and reliable way to develop immunity to these three diseases. Children: The MMR vaccine is typically given to children in two doses. The first dose is usually administered between 12 and 15 months of age, and the second dose is between 4 and 6 years old.Adults: Adults who haven't been vaccinated as children or are unsure of their vaccination status should also consider getting the MMR vaccine. Talk to your doctor to see if you need to be vaccinated. Beyond Vaccination: Good Hygiene Habits Vaccination is the best defense, but there are other steps you can take to reduce your risk of getting mumps: Frequent Handwashing: This is a simple yet powerful way to prevent the spread of germs, including the mumps virus. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after using the restroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.Cough and Sneeze Etiquette: When you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue. Dispose of the tissue properly and then wash your hands immediately.Avoid Sharing Personal Items: Don't share utensils, drinks, or personal items like towels or handkerchiefs with someone who is sick.Stay Home When Sick: If you suspect you have mumps, avoid close contact with others to prevent spreading the virus. Stay home from work, school, or childcare facilities until you've recovered. Recognizing the Signs and Symptoms: Knowing the symptoms of mumps can help you identify potential cases and take steps to avoid getting sick yourself: FeverSwollen cheeks and jaw (usually on one side at first, then the other)HeadacheMuscle achesFatigueLoss of appetiteIf you experience these symptoms, consult your doctor for diagnosis and guidance. Early diagnosis can help prevent complications and the spread of the virus. Remember: Vaccination is the best protection against mumps. Managing Gastroparesis: Dietary Adjustments: A key aspect of managing gastroparesis is making dietary adjustments. Eating smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day instead of three large meals can help ease the burden on the stomach and improve digestion. Additionally, avoiding high-fat or high-fiber foods that are harder to digest can reduce symptoms such as bloating, discomfort, and delayed gastric emptying. Opting for easily digestible foods like lean proteins, cooked vegetables, and soft fruits can be beneficial. Medications: Your healthcare provider may prescribe medications to help manage gastroparesis symptoms. Prokinetic drugs are commonly used to stimulate stomach contractions and improve motility, aiding in the movement of food through the digestive system. Antiemetics may be prescribed to control nausea and vomiting, which are common symptoms of gastroparesis. Acid-suppressing medications can also be beneficial in reducing acid reflux and related discomfort. Nutritional Support: In severe cases of gastroparesis where food intake is significantly affected, nutritional support may be necessary. This can include the use of nutritional supplements to ensure adequate intake of essential nutrients. In some instances, a feeding tube may be recommended to deliver nutrients directly into the digestive system, bypassing the stomach and improving nutritional status. Lifestyle Changes: Making certain lifestyle changes can complement medical treatments and improve overall well-being for individuals with gastroparesis. Managing stress through relaxation techniques like deep breathing exercises, meditation, or yoga can help reduce symptoms as stress can exacerbate digestive issues. Staying hydrated is essential, so aim to drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, preferably water or electrolyte-rich beverages. Incorporating gentle exercise such as walking or low-impact activities can promote digestion and overall gastrointestinal health. It's important to work closely with your healthcare provider to develop a personalized management plan for gastroparesis. This plan may involve a combination of dietary adjustments, medications, nutritional support, and lifestyle modifications tailored to your specific needs and symptoms. Regular follow-ups and monitoring are also crucial to assess progress, adjust treatments as needed, and ensure optimal management of gastroparesis. Understanding the Core of Gastroparesis: Gastroparesis is a gastrointestinal disorder characterized by weakened or impaired stomach muscles, leading to delayed gastric emptying. Normally, food moves from the stomach to the small intestine through coordinated muscle contractions. However, in gastroparesis, this process is disrupted, resulting in symptoms such as bloating, nausea, vomiting, and early satiety. Symptoms of Gastroparesis: Bloating and Abdominal Discomfort: Patients with gastroparesis often experience bloating, abdominal distension, and discomfort after eating.Nausea and Vomiting: Persistent nausea and vomiting, particularly after meals, are common symptoms of gastroparesis.Early Satiety: Patients may feel full soon after starting a meal, leading to reduced food intake and potential weight loss.Heartburn and Acid Reflux: Gastroparesis can cause reflux of stomach contents into the esophagus, leading to heartburn and acid regurgitation.Fluctuating Blood Sugar Levels: Delayed gastric emptying can affect the absorption of nutrients and lead to unpredictable blood sugar levels, especially in individuals with diabetes. Causes of Gastroparesis: The exact cause of gastroparesis can vary and may include: Diabetes: Diabetic gastroparesis is a common cause, where high blood sugar levels can damage nerves that control stomach muscle contractions.Post-Surgical Complications: Some patients develop gastroparesis after certain types of abdominal surgeries, affecting stomach motility.Neurological Disorders: Conditions like Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, or stroke can affect nerve function in the digestive tract, leading to gastroparesis.Medications: Certain medications, such as opioids and some antidepressants, can slow gastric emptying and contribute to gastroparesis.Autoimmune Disorders: Conditions like scleroderma and autoimmune gastritis can cause inflammation and damage to stomach muscles.Infections: Viral infections or bacterial overgrowth in the digestive tract can disrupt normal stomach function and lead to gastroparesis. Management of Gastroparesis: Treatment for gastroparesis aims to alleviate symptoms, improve digestion, and manage underlying causes. This may include: Dietary Modifications: Eating smaller, more frequent meals and avoiding high-fat or high-fiber foods can help manage symptoms.Medications: Prokinetic drugs that promote stomach motility, antiemetics to control nausea and acid-suppressing medications may be prescribed.Nutritional Support: In severe cases, nutritional supplementation or feeding tubes may be necessary to ensure adequate nutrient intake.Lifestyle Changes: Managing stress, staying hydrated, and incorporating gentle physical activity can support digestive health. Why Choose Continental Hospital Hyderabad for Gastroparesis Care:Continental Hospital Hyderabad offers comprehensive gastroenterology services, including diagnosis, treatment, and management of gastroparesis. Listening to music helps improve cognitive skills
Listening to music helps improve cognitive skills
Enjoy the melody, without damaging your ears Music inspires us to do many new things in life and motivates us to overcome challenges! Music improves other senses of a human body, like gaining better vision and improved response to touch. Overall music even helps in improving the ability to paint a better and complete picture of the world at large. However, one important caution is to avoid listening to loud music to ensure it does not damage the ears. Music is present in every aspect of our life and we voluntarily or involuntarily are exposed to music daily. It is important that one is exposed to the right kind of music, which is soothing in nature in the longer term, instead of loud/brash sounds. Intermittent bouts of rap or rock-n-roll are fine, but this cannot be a mainstay in one’s life to stay healthy for a long period of time. 5-Tips: Listen to Music, Responsibly Use Music Players at 60% of the Maximum Volume Use Your Music Player For 60 Minutes A Day Only Commenting on the impact of music, Dr. Ashok Kumar Singh, Consultant ENT Surgeon, Continental Hospitals said, “According to some research reports on the impact of music on education, it has been found that those students who listening to good quality music daily turn out to be good in science and mathematics, especially ‘algebra’. Music is believed to play the role of ‘social glue’, and young minds exposed to music emerge into good Samaritans as they grow.” “A 2014 research report by the Department of Education in the United States indicated that over 93% of students exposed to good music graduated with merit, and music also removes barriers between students coming from various ethnic and social backgrounds. Music also helps adolescents release or control emotions and helps them cope with difficult situations such as peer pressure, substance abuse, pressures of study and family, the dynamics of friendships and social life, and the pain of loss or abuse.” It is widely believed that rhythm abilities, such as tapping to a beat, relate with reading skills, and available initial evidence of how both abilities may rely on common underlying neural mechanisms of sound processing reiterates the importance of music in a student’s life. Not just these, teenagers associate playing music with music literacy, listening skills, motor ability, eye-hand coordination, and heightened intellectual capabilities, etc. Read More
Take care of your kidney”s health
Take care of your kidney”s health
Hyderabad, March 11 (IANS) At a time when the world is worried about coronavirus pandemic, the World Kidney Day on March 12 may pass as another annual event. But the kidney-related ailments are silent killer. The day aims to raise awareness about kidney”s importance to overall health and to reduce the frequency and impact of kidney disease and its associated health issues worldwide. Diabetes, hypertension and obesity are some of the high-risk factors that result in kidney ailments and at times are life-threatening in nature, according to Dr Dhananjaya K.L., consultant nephrologist at Continental Hospitals, here. Undergoing tests is the only and best way to know the health of kidneys. A person with symptoms, like fatigue, high blood pressure and swelling of feet, must be careful of his kidneys; and ideally undergo regular health check-up for blood sugar, creatinine and eGFR to assess its filtration rate. India is estimated to have over 50 million people with diabetes. They are at a high risk of chronic kidney ailments. The diseases become prevalent, mainly due to poor lifestyle choices of people. Hence, it”s important to realise importance of leading an active and energised life to prevent the possibility of diabetes that could lead to kidney-related complications. “In a human body, kidneys are among the most amazing organs, which ensure wellbeing of the person. These bean-shaped organs filter 1,200 ml of blood per minute (1,700 litres a day) to keep the person healthy. It also helps remove waste and maintain a balance of chemicals and minerals in the body. It”s the process that happens in a kidney that keeps bones and teeth strong,” said Dr Dhananjaya. “While dialysis is the most common available treatment to support failing kidneys, at an advanced stage, often considered as renal failure, the only option left is to undergo a transplant,” he said. Hyderabad, considered a major healthcare destination, offers world-class kidney transplant facilities from a variety of sources, like live and cadaveric transplant. Chief Transplant Urologist and a Padmasri Awardee Sarbeswar Sahariah, who recently completed 1,000 kidney transplant surgeries, believes transplantation is a safe and best approach for individuals suffering kidney failure to lead an active life. How to stay stress-free during COVID-19 lockdown
How to stay stress-free during COVID-19 lockdown
People are suggested to main ‘social distance’ to ensure the menace of coronavirus does not find a breeding groundin the form of easy transmission between people. HYDERABAD: Unforeseen circumstances require unprecedented measures! And today India is under an unprecedented “lockdown” for 21-days to fight the global pandemic coronavirus. The lockdown would mean people would not be allowed to step out of their homes freely and will have restricted access to even everyday essential commodities. People are suggested to main ‘social distance’ to ensure the menace of coronavirus does not find a breeding groundin the form of easy transmission between people. However, for a large section of people in Indian society, thisis unacceptable! It has been noticed that people are not just worried about their economic prospects; but alsoexpressing anguish over getting restricted to their residences. Risk factors : Commenting on the risks, Dr. Jyotirmayi K, Consultant Psychiatrist, Continental Hospitals said,“Lockdown or other restrictions to daily routine will be stressful and there surely are going to be some psychological impacts on people. To avoid greater damage from happening time and again, we humans need to work harder enduring some levels of stress; and must realize that this phase too will pass soon.” To keep yourself active Remind yourself that this is a temporary phase Remember that you are a hero, and doing this for the community Stay connected with near & dear via phone, email, social media Sleep at regular routines to find each passing day relaxing Stay physically active to ensure mental agility Maintain balance by allocating specific work hours, and take regular breaks Focus on doing household chores and share burden with family members Avoid news and social media if you find it distressing “On an everyday basis, most people state they do not find time for themselves for their wellbeing. This 21-daylockdown has provided the perfect opportunity for people to spend time on themselves. Doing Yoga, speaking tofamily members, remembering past/childhood memories, speaking to old friends and reminiscing past memories couldbe a perfect way to keep oneself active and keep off from anxiety,” concluded Dr. Jyotirmayi. Another risk associated with this lockdown is the possibility of one retreating into a sedentary lifestyle, and thus adding many kilograms to the bodyweight. Commenting on this, Zeenath Fatima, Consultant Dietician, Continental Hospitals said, “During normal days manypeople tend to eat at restaurants or foods prepared not at home, doing no great favor to the human body. Put underrestrictions, now people are forced to opt for home-cooked food, which is the best and healthiest option any day.Eating green-leafy and other regular vegetables will not increase weight and during these stressful times, avoidingmeat or meat-based foods could be a better idea.” Life under a lockdown situation can negatively affect mental health, causing post-traumatic stress, confusion and even anger. But by keeping your active life going and maintaining peace in life is the best solution to ensure you wade through these difficult times with ease. Read More
What Covid? Birth date still matters
What Covid? Birth date still matters
In the times of Covid-19, what has not changed are the date and time when a newborn infant is born and doctors cannot argue about it as the pregnant woman is their major concern. These dictates are still being noted in maternity hospitals as the time and day of birthing is a priority for families and their astrological calendars. A C-Section delivery, very high in both Telugu-speaking states, is still a preference during these times too. Only corporate and big nursing homes are operational and all the load of affluent patients is on them. A senior doctor, on condition of anonymity, explained, “We have a virus around us but that does not stop people from arguing over the time and day of the delivery. These beliefs are strong and with a newborn baby, no risks in astrology are to be taken.” Doctors are keen that pregnant women are safe and for that reason normal delivery is carried out by junior doctors and senior doctors are around for supervision. Earlier, they would all crowd around the patient along with the nurses but now social distance is maintained. “It is like going back to old times where the woman has to push the baby down and from far, we would give instructions,” explained a senior doctor. C-sections are done by wearing personal protective equipment as due to Covid-19 these extra precautionary measures have to be taken during the birthing process. The biggest challenge stated doctors are the scans as they are not being carried out for all pregnant women. “We are going back to times when there were no ultrasound scans. This is because it would unnecessarily expose a pregnant woman to risk. Hence only if there is a clinical indication of anomaly in foetal movement then scans are being done. It is one in 2000 cases and, mostly, not required.” Scanning was a major part of all the three trimesters but doctors now do not want to risk their patients. The husband was a part of the birthing process but that also is not allowed as it is not safe. Similarly, those in the first and second trimesters of the pregnancy are not called to hospitals for routine checks but video conferencing is provided to clear their doubts. Tele-medicine and email are also used by patients to check on substitutes for medicines as there is a crisis of brands. Dr Sri Latha Gorthi, gynaecologist, explained, “So far we have dealt with patients who have been seeing us from first day. Hence we know their history. Yet we check with them if they have come in contact with anyone who has travelled from abroad. There has not been a single case so far but precautions of checking travel history are mandatory for us too.” Pregnant women are already immune-compromised and hence precautions in terms of social distancing, hygiene, avoiding contact with people from Covid-19-affected countries and also within the community is important, stated Dr Kavitha Naragoni, senior gynecologist and infertility specialist at Continental Hospitals.
